Pixies Live at Austin Music Hall

One of the most unlikely reunions to ever transpire, the Pixies notoriously rocky on-and-off-stage relationships have nevertheless yielded some inspired live sets in recent years. Having caught several of their initial 'hey, we're back!' shows in 2004, the Pixies live show in 2010 was a more orchestrated beast altogether.

Hitting the road in homage to the twentieth anniversary of their seminal album 'Doolittle', their Austin, Texas performance opened with a 10-minute showing of the Savador Dali film 'Un Chien Andalou' (from which much of the tune "Debaser" was inspired, including the notorious 'cuttin' up eyeballs' sequence). Somewhat strangely, Soynut butter the band kicked off the music with a trio of b-sides rather than immediately diving into 'Doolittle', offering up "Dancing the Manta Ray" as an introduction to the evening's festivities.

Flanked by a video-projected giant record player, 'Doolittle' finally started in earnest at about song five; tearing through the cuts with gusto, Frank Black's vocals were at their howling, shrieking best (especially on "Tame"). The so-called hits like "Here Comes Your Man" and "Monkey Gone To Heaven" fittingly got the most crowd response, but even down-tempo numbers like "La La Love You" (featuring some Disney-worthy heart animation on the backdrop) and "Hey" were met with roars of approval.

The double encore was, unsurprisingly, loaded with some of the band's strongest material, with the Kim Deal-sung track "Into the White' taking on new levels of surrealism as the band blasted the entire venue full of strobe light-laden fog. "U-Mass" was pitch-perfect in its guitar shredding glory, and "Where is my Mind" gave 'Fight Club' fans something additional to cheer about. Taking a group bow after the closing chords of "Gigantic" rang out, the Pixies proved that sometimes you can go home again.
